Xtorrent Public Beta 1

Today I am pleased to announce the immediately availability of my newest software project, in public beta form. Xtorrent is an advanced torrent client that has been in development for several months. It aims to bring a friendly interface and powerful features to the world of BitTorrent.

Some of the highlights:
- ultra-simple torrent search with one-click downloading (an Xtorrent original)
- a high performance torrent core
- detailed download information and activity monitoring
- powerful seeding and ratio controls
- integration with iTunes
- folder monitoring and automatic .torrent downloading

Please note, this is beta software. It’s not feature complete, it probably has quirks, and it will expire when the beta period is over. It’s quite solid and very usable, but there’s a lot of cool stuff yet to come.

Jason...

its almost like you’re reading my (and the entire mac community’s) mind

Paul...

Once again Dave, you’ve nailed it! Sure there are a few beta clitches (changing the default download location, and then trying to choose a folder for incomplete downloads stalled the app), but this is a very nice addition to your software portfolio.

Question. What are you plans for existing torrent support in Aquisition, will this now disappear (or indeed improve?). I’m sure we can expect a lot of the visual tweaks (and iTunes 7 UI) to make its way into a forthcoming release of Aquisition too?

Great work, I’m looking forward to it’s final release!

Jesper...

Very, very, very, very, very cool.

Nicola...

compliments! very good…supreme design :)

walkingmac...

Freakin brilliant app… this will become the default bittorrent client on the mac

Fred...

I had some spontaneous ‘quits/reopens’.
It’s running fine now.

Jon...

Are you planning any advanced torrent management features such as file prioritising within torrents, per-file bandwidth allocation?
On windows I use uTorrent and I miss, on Macs, the fact that I can select which files within a torrent ‘folder’ I wish to download as well as giving certain files higher priority within a torrent download. To my knowlege no native mac torrent client offers that level of control. Azureus has some of these features but I’d much prefer a native Cocoa app to a slower Java implementation.

Tim...

Fantastic job, Dave.

chan...

Looks good. Works ok. Is it possible to implement the feature which you can choose which file in the torrent to download or not download.

FRO...

Awesome!! Awesome!! Love the Bitorrent file handling, makes it much easier to keep things clean!

Ted...

Dave, you’ve reached in the depths of possibility and pulled out another winner. Good job. While I’m not a supporter of what BT get used for most often, I still have to admire the devotion to perfection that you have. It makes the Mac better and better.

Dean...

It crashed on opening the first time I launched, then crashed when I tried to change where incomplete downloads were saved.

PPC Mac mini
OS 10.4.7

Macguy...

So do you have any plans for charging for it?

Stewf...

Excited about this one, Dave. Could http://torrentscan.com/ be added to the XTorrent search?

Steven...

Seems to kick several shades of ass so far. I like.

James...

I’m sorry for the dumb questions, but:

1. What exactly is bittorrents, and how does it differ from Peer-2-Peer?

2. Since Acquisition has bittorrent features, then why would I want to use this if I have Acquisiton?

Thanks you very much!

auhlixer...

Can you forward ports with this? and if so what ports or whatever?

As with Acquisition, port forwarding is done automatically on supported routers.

unispherephoto@gmail.com...

dave, are you planning on fixing the announce interval/ratio issues that libtransmission has so that xtorrent can me used on a number of unusable (at the moment) trackers?

I’d rather see that fixed on the Transmission mainline, for the benefit of everyone.  Perhaps I’ll offer a bounty to get it fixed.

Mike...

Amazing work, Dave. Would love to see individual file prioritisation within torrents (eg. select just one file from a torrent to retrieve, instead of the whole lot, as well as getting certain files first).

kylix...

Xtorrent is working excellently. But my .torrent files are disappeared after adding .torrent files which in desktop to download. How can I resolve this problem, please? Anyway, I’m thankful to you for Xtorrent project. Good job!

Jay...

just wondering….where do the files that are automatically imported end up, cuz there not in my torrent folder anymore.

John...

This is the shit, oh my god its GREAT!!!!! Thank you!!

Anirog...

I love you, Xtorrent is genius, the search is the killer function with this app, my only niggle is it’s a bit processor hungry.

Gavin...

Beautiful… just beautiful!

Your apps are why I love Macs,

Keep up the freakin’ ace work son!

~ Gav.

Drob...

very cool. thank you.

James...

Looks great. I haven’t used it yet, but the idea of being able to search within the app is the best.

I hate to nitpick, but you say:

Please note, this is beta software. It’s not feature complete …

Beta” implies “feature-complete.”

If it’s not feature-complete, it’s alpha.

Greg...

Hi there DW,

Great job !!

Just missing one feature IMHO: The number of Seeders and Leechers by torrent, to know its living status before downloading… but is it technically possible ?

Kind regards from France,

Greg

Hussain...

i think Acquisition should keep torrent support as it is, perfect for amateurs as it’s basic, and if they’d like advanced features then they can get Xtorrent

Torrent support in Acquisition will be unchanged.

josh...

David,

Your apps are beautiful, elegant, simple yet powerful, be it aquisition which is an application unrivled in elegance and beauty or inquisitor; so subltle that it feels like a part of the system xtorrent looks like a fine addition to your apps! congrats i cant wait to follow its development!

Mikey...

When you say supported routers what exactly does that mean? Do you mean UPnP? Because that doesn’t seem to be the case on my end. Other than and the wish for file prioritizaon, it looksgreat.

Rich...

Does it support torrent encyrption as I am finding this is a must in the UK with more and more ISP’s limiting torrent bandwidth.

peter...

I added i few of my own search strings, but they didn’t work until i relaunched xtorrent. So if your favourite search string doesn’t work, relaunch xtorrent, and it might work.

Kieron...

The app is certainly beautiful. The mechanism you’re using for calculating the remaining time is (or appears to be) wildly out. I’ve had it download almost all a torrent and then sit showing 8-10 minutes for 3 days!

Keep up the good work,

regards,

K.

Mitchell...

I don’t see the point doesn’t Acquisition already handle this?
If I’m wrong please explain.

Hjalti...

I was wondering if future plans involve implementing protocol encryption and selective downloading?

Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Regards,
Hjalti

mackrick...

This is the best bit torrent apps that I have come across. Keep up the good work.

Shai...

Any RSS features planned? Didnt see any mentioned in the post I read.

Luke...

First off I would like to think you for taking the time to creat such an amazing set of applications.

For some reason though, I can’t get torrents to download on eihter xtorrent or acquisition…

Just says either “connecting…” or “anylising…” depending on which app i’m using. Any help? I’ve already opened the correct ports on my router.

nikolai...

this is the most advanced torrent client have seen for Mac OS X, let alone any OS. I am running leopard 10.4b on a macbook pro with 2GB of ram. i often breach download speeds of 800k and upload at 100k strongly. wirelessly. yes i have beefy cable.

i have never seen such a comfortable interface with such detailed UI for P2P clients. xtorrent is truly ane example of th future of app development for any P2P platform- and should be considered a standard beyond BNBT.

i am EXTREMELY impressed by this product.

laurie...

I’m new to torrents, so I was looking for software that wasn’t complicated or required too much of a learning curve. I tried two other programs, but found yours to be the best of the bunch. Great interface, easy to use.

I’d like to add my vote for the ability to select which part of the torrent I would like to download.

Thank you for all your effort.

Alex...

Looks like a really great app. However, the download link doesn’t work for me (Camino)

And why copy a UI (iTunes 7) that wasn’t well recieved in the first place??? I liked the old aquisition UI.

Okayde...

I do click to download but nothing happens.
Its a great program.

itres...

Excellent piece of software, great job.
I’ve just upgraded to v16 and it keeps on hanging an taking 100% cpu.
I’d like to go back to v15 until the problem is solved, where can I found it?

Keep up the good job…

Robert...

It’s been said many times over, but I just have to say it again. Excellent work on this app ! The interface is stunning.

And to echo a couple of other requests, the two features I would like to see are:

1. Encrypted Protocol Support
2. Individual File Selection (Within a torrent).

eric...

Does it have to search google as well as what i’ve selected? I only want to use this for filling up iTunes, so sites that have ipod formats are greatly preferred.

Great job. I have purchased Acquisition and I will purchase this.

André...

Hi Thanks for this awsome application, is really great.

I have a discover a bug or maybe is thera a solution to this, i can’t make any download of the torrent in btjunkie in the seach option i Xtorrent, when i put the code to begin the download the torrent nothing happend, if i do that in Safari everything goes right.

Can you help me on this.

Thanks in advance

Mark...

Wow. After suffering through using the other clients available for macs, Xtorrent is a breath of fresh air! :)

Features I’d really like to see (starting with the most desired):
- rss feed support (like RSSFeedScanner in azeurus)
- file selection (for partial downloads)
- ping-based bandwidth throttle (ala azeurus’ auto speed)

If I could set up Xtorrent to automatically download new episodes of my favorite tv show as they become available (like in azeurus), I would be in heaven, and could throw out the other client I’m using now.

Feiko...

I just wanted to say how wonderful your app is, it’s simple sleek and elegant and looks like it was made by apple software designers themselves. I would agree with a person somewhere above me stating that if OSX should come with a bit-torrent client, this should be the one.

Heymbit...

Hey Dave, excellent work. I currently have an account at Demonoid, and I hope Oink soon too. So I was wondering if there was a way we could add places the search engine searches for torrents, so that those of us with private accounts can also search those sites within xtorrent. Or perhaps make it default, and just make it so we have to login to the site within xtorrent to have the results show up, or something.

zorg...

exellent, rapide, simple, souple dans son utilisation, bref !!! que du bon

bbrad2...

Awesome application. After one use I dumped my other ones. Well done sir!

Rob...

I’m a HUGE fan of your applications and wanted to say amazing work. I have run into one snag I wanted to make you aware of and it might just be my local config so if you need that let me know through email.

Here’s the problem: When I’m running x-torrent somehow or another my bandwidth stream is getting flooded and causing timeouts but only within my browser. I’m getting full BW to Xtorrent.

Just for throughness you should know that I’m already throttling back my upload speed to 1/4 of my bandwidth so that’s not the issue.

Thanks for the great programs! (So any deals for us Acquisition owners around the corner ;) )

Rob

Alex...

For those looking for RSS support, just check “automatically download audio/video attachments” for a feed in NewsFire and configure Xtorrent to autodownload. NewsFire puts the torrent on your hard drive and Xtorrent automatically starts the download. Beautiful!

tim...

hi bud .. we realy love this! and would like to remain usin it , is there a fee to pay now ? , as it seems to have stopped downloadin ,, we’ve had it now for about 6 weeks now .. thanks tim.

jean...

Reading what all people have to say about your good work, do you plan to make a version for those who still run Mac OSX 10.3.9? Please give me an answer

Paulo...

Well, as everybody here, i love xTorrent, its really beautifull!!Thanks Dave!

But i got a little problem, in certain torrents, it launches the dowload quickly, download it till its 80/90% complete and then completely stops and never restarts, so i cant finish that download!!It happened to me with 3 or 4 torrents already! Do someone know something about this?

Thanks!

rob...

xtorrent will not stop pausing.
