NewsFire 1.4

NewsFire 1.4 Screenshot

I’m very happy to announce the immediate release of the latest version of NewsFire.

Version 1.4 further refines the already elegant RSS newsreading experience of NewsFire. Important new features include an integrated video player for video podcasts, a new ‘status’ sort option that prioritizes items needing attention, and type-ahead selection.

Equally important, NewsFire 1.4 has substantial performance improvements over previous versions and now runs smoothly even with several hundred feeds.

NewsFire 1.4 is a complimentary upgrade for registered users. New users can try NewsFire for free, albeit with restrictions. Registration of NewsFire costs only $18.99.

Hi Dave,

on the NewsFire page you have a little error:
When you click on download, the button on top says you can have NewsFire for 18.99 while the button further down the page says 16.99.

Bastiaan...

Dave,
You rock!

wastern...

I just purchased Newsfire about an hour ago, I always love seeing how active the development is on all of your applications (I don’t know how you have the time)

The video is what got me. I’ve yet to find a good app for vidcasts, I’m betting on this one as i’ve purchased and have been very pleased with everything else you’ve put out thus far.

Mark...

Excellent, certainly seems a bit more nippy with my huge array of feeds. And the status sort is top!

edemay...

Cool stuff Dave.
Has anyone ever suggested newsfire syncing between 2 (or more?) computers? I would love my home and work feeds staying synchro.

Manfred...

Since the 1.4 beta’s newsfire immediately crashes when I open it. Is this a know problem?

Joel...

It just gets better and better. Congratulations on this latest release.

Thickey...

I have tried NewsFire on and off for a few months now, my day to day RSS reader is NNW.

I can do almost everything that I want with NewsFire but have a list of my feeds and the item that I am reading on display at the same time. Perhaps I just need to get my head around not having this but is there away to get NewsFire to show stuff in this way?

But it looks very good.. I may just switch

Glenn...

I’d love the ability to sync between two Mac’s too…

Dylan...

Dave has said many times that syncing is in the works. Just don’t hold your breath.

Rodney...

Are there any plans in the works for a web browser as a part of this program? Thanks for your work.

Dimitry...

Wonderful man. Thanks for adding the sorting buttons. Before, bookmarking wasn’t very useful. Now, it’s great.

Is there a quick way to flag an item though w/o right clicking?

Thanks
Dimitry

Tobi...

Hi,
maybe it’s a side effect of the cool new type ahead-selection -feature, but in the new version it’s no longer possible to open a site from within the feedlist by just typing or .
I miss that.
And speaking of type ahead … wouldn’t it be cool, if you could type ahead-select any links in the reading pane, too? I think, it would!
Thanks for the elegant app …
Tobi

Tobi...

Oh, my brackets were eaten.
So, it’s no longer possible to open a site from within the feedlist by typing ENTER or RETURN.

Thijs...

Just bought a license and I’m now switching over from NetNewsWire. NewsFire seems to be faster, better looking and simpler to use.

Vlad...

Hey there, I love your application and I wanna buy it tonight, but onlyn one thing is missing, the ability to be the default rss reader in mac os, so that when u access a feed from safari it gets added in newsfire directly!

Keep up the good work!

William...

Vlad, to make NewsFire the default RSS reader, go to Safari preferences and click the RSS tab and there should be a section allowing you to make NewsFire the default RSS reader.

Adam...

Vlad,

You can set the default reader in Safari’s preferences.

.dean...

you rock man , love your newsfire and promote it every time anyone ask about a rss reader.

Duane...

I love the software and have fully converted over from NetNewsWire. The only thing I miss is the Message/Browser split screen offered in almost every other aggregator. Keep up the great work!

Vlad...

great thanks for the tip! It made me buy a license!!! Gosh! I’m ashamed of even not know safari that much!

soraya...

hey david, congratulations on everything! cory and clifford told me about the computer program success — your mom must be so proud ;)

i have a blog too, which i put in the field thingies above. its probably not really your cup of tea but etc. again, congrats!

Thomas...

I love newsfire, never had a problem with it and overall I love this new version. However, a number of my feeds have disappeared. I can still access them via smart feeds and searches but I just can’t see them?

Jay...

I just tried to upgrade from 1.3 and I can’t seem to run the latest version (1.4). It fails on start up. It will run in my administrator log on, but not in the standard user that I use for my daily work. Can you suggest something that will solve this problem?

Thanks!

David...

Just updated to 1.4 and NewsFire wouldn’t load until I choose “use new settings” which erased all my folders and feeds – at least in the reader. The data still seems to be in my caches…

I’m on a Macbook Pro. Is this an Intel thing? I’ve never had a problem updating your app before?

Can I get my feeds and folders back?

Anthony...

Oh lordy — the performance improvements are wonderful.

I have around 300 feeds and you’d think I was on an Intel Mac. Wonderful, wonderful job, David. And I’m dropping my request for a progress bar when updating — the new version zips along at all times without hogging the CPU on load.

Can’t wait for your next hat trick.

Cheers!

Chris...

Thanks for the performance improvements, they were badly needed! There’s still some disparity between the time it takes to mark items as read though – this is always instantaneous when a group of smart feed is selected, but if you select and actual feed (particularly one with more than a thousand items), it can take a long time to mark all the items as read.

Oh, and is there any particular place where I should direct feature requests?

Tony...

I’m checking NewsFire out for the first time. Is there any way to set Shiira as the default browser? I have Shiira set as default in Safari prefs, but Safari still opens up when I hit ENTER on a feed?

Thanks

NewsFire opens the system default web browser, which can be set in Safari’s preferences (why this preference is in Safari and not System Preferences is a curious one).

Tony...

^
Yeah I know. I have it set to use Shiira. Every other app opens Shiira except NewsFire :-). It persists in opening Safari !!

Chris...

I installed 1.4 on top of 1.3. It crashes frequently on me… I’m using a g4 mini. Mac OS X 10.4.7. I’ll be happy to help debug in any way that I can.

Also, a feature request: I use NewsFire exclusively for podcasts. I’d like to be able to have a given feed set a unqiue genre, or go to a playlist of the feed name, or something similar.

Thanks,
Chris

Matt...

Dave, I’ve got two quick suggestions. If you can implement them it would be great!

First, can you make it so there is an option to set the background color of read and unread rows? I usually use a newsreader maximized and it’s easier to see what’s unread for me that way.

It’d also be awesome if you could make it so when you go to a feed and read an item, then go back to the feed screen, the item you just read would drop down below the unread items. It’d be very easy to keep track of which stuff I had left to read that way.

Thanks!

Sebastian...

What about an alternate payment method ? I cannot use Paypal, since I live in Romania. It would be nice if you could support a reseller which doesn’t restrict Romania.

Matt...

When will there be a localized version of your software? Looking for a German version.
I also would appreciate the possibility of editing the Search Engines for the “Search Feed”, e.g. you are using google.com which is in English. I would prefer the German Google version google.de.

ljun...

can there be support for attention.xml w/FTP syncing?

There’s no way to synchronize your RSS feeds with other computers….. :(

Also, a way to import reliably NetNewsWire articles/feeds? :(

Theresa...

I love your program, I really do, but DANG! revision 67? It seems like I’m constantly downloading updates.

Steven...

Is there a way in Newsfire to use the keyboard to select a specific news article to read. I know how to switch feeds and or view the list of items for a feed but once you are looking at that list of items the only way to select a specific news item is with the mouse?

Thomas...

Hello,

I’ve downloaded Newsfire, and I’m trying it in demo mode.
One thing I really miss is a keyboard shortcut to mark an item as Unread.

When I navigate through my feeds, I use CTRL + ->, and I read the items. But quite often, there is an interresting item that I want to keep as Unread because it is quite long and I prefer to read it later.

It would be terrific to have a shortcut to mark the item as Unread instead of leaving the keyboard and clicking the mouse.

Also, when I mark an item as Unread with the mouse, then I hit CTRL + -> to go to the next Unread item, it stays on the same item I marked as Unread, it would be nice to go to the *next* Unread item and to leave the current as Unread.

I hope my explanation is clear.

Do you think it’s possible?
Thanks,
Thomas.

P.S. : your app is very neat, and easy to use, hands on keyboard! Congrats!

Vlad...

just a question, is that normal that I can’t select multiple feeds and apply them the same setting or move them to the same folder using the standard shift-click or apple-click? I couldnt find a way to select multiple feeds yet, but there is the option remove selected from group…

what did i miss?

Eugene...

Dave, I’d like to purchase Newsfire but I live in Russia and Paypal does not allow me to register. Are there other ways of paying for Newsfire?

Tibs...

Steven,
I have the same complaint. I can’t scroll with the arrows through the articles.

davis...

I’m glad to see a tiny feature appear: you can now mark an item as unread by right-clicking on the item itself, in the right-hand pane. Handy.

It would be nice to have filters. A use case: creating a feed for a subset of a huge blog. In the past you could do this by creating a feed for the huge blog, creating a smart feed for the subset that you want to read, then hiding the huge feed. Now, that seems to be a little broken, because the smart feed’s unread items sometimes don’t appear in the status-sorted list (bug?). I don’t see how to hide or unhide a feed any more, either, but maybe I’m overlooking it.

A better approach might be to allow a web feed to have some rules. Then you could do it all with one feed, no hiding necessary.

Andy...

Please consider adding Google reader support. It would be great for syncing, and on-the-road reading, while still have the great Newsfire when at personal computer, or when offline.

Phil...

Any chance of a price drop? I love the app but I can’t spend $20 USD on it….

Ian...

When will you include an export mode that keeps the folder organization? Does it exist and am I just missing it?

StarManta...

I can’t find a proper place to put feature requests, so I’ll just throw one up here: make images shrink to fit in the viewer window. (To see what I mean, subscribe to engadget – their RSS feed now includes very high-res images) Bonus points if the images resize in realtime as the window is resized.

Noah...

I second Andy’s request. Support for the Google Reader API, when it is released, will have me using NewsFire 24/7. :)

Levi...

I also would love to see Google Reader support. Please hook it up… =0)

Lars-Erik...

I second that, Google Reader sync please :)

Mark...

Me Three :-)

Paul...

Feature Request: Use osx’s shared cookie storage capabilities so that RSS feeds that require a login cookie will work after you login via Safari.

At present the biggest example of this is Livejournal which I have to use Safari for because otherwise I don’t see the friends-only posts.

arnaud...

Hello Dave

As everyone else I LOVE NewsFire, and made it my favorite news reader.
But I would love some new features :

- first and foremost, the ability to sync, one way or another, between two syncs.
(even to know how to do it manually, which files to copy/sync – via Chronosync for instance- would be great

- the ability to select several feeds (via holding Shift for instance) and to read the articles from them as a whole.

- the possibiliy to export/import and keeping the folders organized

- a progress bar to see the syncs when they’re happening.

Not very original suggestions, but I hope they’re useful to you.

Katsuyuki...

Hi,
Adding following fees causes crash.
http://www.0sae.net/?mode=rss

snowbutterfly...

I know that David says there’s just no way to “sync” newsfire, but Isn’t there a way to say use syntwofolders to sync the preferences between two machines, and then have newsfire open up with the set of articles you haven’t read yet?

Please David, is there a way?

Andy...

Coming in late to the conversation, but Sync’ing would be my big feature request too – I use three Macs and change my feeds quite a lot, so no Sync is a pain in what is, in all other respects, an excellent application.

Matej...

Is it posible to open a link in a new tab rather than a new window?

Paul...

I’m trying to add an authenticated feed (HTTP Basic, over SSL) to NewsFire 1.4 (trial). The feed is added, but it never asks me for my username and password or provide an error message. Every time I refresh, nothing happens.

The changelog seems to indicate that NewsFire supports authenticated feeds… What am I missing or misunderstanding?

Paul...

The feed mentionned in my previous post is an Atom 1.0 feed.

Steve...

Anyone else having crashing issues with 1.4(69)??? I started having them today and can’t get it to finish loading now. Tried re-downloading but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated. :-/

Tobias...

Newsfire does still not support https, right?

richard...

Just bought it, love it! The sole thing I cannot figure out is how to view a larger number of (older) items for a given feed. In Google Reader, I can see 100+ items that date back a fair bit… NewsFire can’t seem to ‘reach’ that far back, even if I set it to ‘Delete items after Never.’ Is this a limitation of the program or the operator? ;^)

Thomas...

I would also love Google Reader syncing support. Great app Dave. Thanks a bunch!

Ash...

wonderful news reader .. use it on a daily basis .. I would really like to be able to be able to select a browser that is not the system default for the articles to open up in ..

consider this another request for google reader support. you have a great product and this would make it almost perfect.
